Cobie Smulders reveals she knew about Agent Maria's fate from the beginning: 'I’ve known about it for years'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Cobie Smulders knew the fate of her character Agent Maria Hill all along! The Canadian actress, in a recent interview, revealed that the makers of ‘Secret Invasion’ had shared the twist when she was brought in for the role. “I was told right away. [Marvel Studios co-president] Lou D’Esposito gave me a call to chat about just joining up [on Secret Invasion], and so I’ve known about it for years, which is really funny,” Smulders said.

Maria was shot dead at the end of the show’s premiere episode which aired on June 21. Her killer was Skrull rebellion leader Gravik, played by Kingsley Ben-Adir by tricking her as he shape lifted into Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson). The ‘How I Met Your Mother’ alum told The Hollywood Reporter that she was ‘surprised’ that the spoiler didn’t come out ahead of the series finale. “There were a lot of people around, so I’m surprised that there wasn’t an image that got leaked,” she said adding, “I guess that’s the respect that Marvel has earned over the last decade, which is like, ‘Don’t spoil it for people.’ And nobody did, thankfully.”

'Smulders and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)'

Smulders has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for over a decade now. She started with ‘The Avengers’ in 2012 and went on to work on multiple projects, including ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,' 'Avengers: Infinity War,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame' and 'Spider-Man: Far From Home.’ The TV shows she appeared in are ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and ‘What If...?’

When asked will she make another appearance as Maria, the 41-year-old said, “I will always answer the call, but I have no idea what they have planned for future productions. But I guess anything’s possible in the multiverse. It has been an amazing 10 years of being a part of something that is so beloved and makes people so excited.”

'Much more dark in tone than ones previous'

In an earlier interview, she told fans during the ‘Secret Invasion’ premiere that the series is going to be ‘darker and grittier than the last Marvel shows. “This series is much more dark in tone than ones previous. It’s hard to know who to trust. ‘Secret Invasion' provides us with insights into the lives of agents striving to safeguard Earth and its inhabitants," she said adding "Now, there is a significant revelation regarding the Skrulls. Maria has been trying to bring Nick Fury back to Earth to assist with numerous issues, but it's only when the Skrulls become public knowledge that she finally grabs his attention."
