Animal charity warns owners against Taylor Swift 'August' trend
Animal charity warns owners against Taylor Swift 'August' trend
As it is the month of August, it's no surprise that Taylor Swift's song August is a currently trending, as people on TikTok have been using the music in videos to channel their main character energy. But a new spin on the trend has seen people's pets take center stage as they are dramatically spun around as Swift sings in the song: "Back when we were still changin' for the better / Wanting was enough / For me, it was enough / To live for the hope of it all..." From dogs, cats, to a hamster, a goat, even a racoon and a hedgehog are some examples of the animals being spun around as part of the trend, with many looking bewildered at their owner's actions. Here are some viral examples that have racked up millions of views: @.naaaat HIS ARMS REACHING OUT I CANNOT @shaneequah_ safe to say indie loved it #fyp#lambs#petspinningchallange @lizzie3427 He tried to kill me after this #fyp #taylorswift #racoon #august #spintrend @sabz.i i don’t think i did this right @emmacchristie Sorry tilly While the owners may be having fun making these TikToks with their pets, animal charity Cats Protection warned that doing this action is not in the best interests for the welfare of pets. "At no point should an animal deliberately be put in a position to feel fear, anxiety, frustration or experience pain for the benefit of human entertainment," Central Behaviour Officer Daniel Warren-Cummings told Metro. "Cats in particular will experience extreme stress by being swung or spun around and it could even cause them physical harm." "In the videos highlighted, the cats are showing clear signs of distress. Even more disappointingly, these are being described as cute or funny in the comments section by people who appear to count themselves as cat lovers. Warren-Cummings added: "It’s clear from the language that the owners don’t understand that animals don’t feel and behave the same way humans do and this undercuts the distress that the cats are experiencing.’ He also noted that even if the actions in the video are brief, it is still "unethical and should not be encouraged.’ Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Kanye West flashes bare butt to spectators on Venice gondola ride
Kanye West flashes bare butt to spectators on Venice gondola ride
Kanye 'Ye' West and Bianca Censori have caught the attention of social media after West was spotted flashing his bare bottom to spectators during a boat ride in Venice. In videos and images circulating online, the rapper can be seen sitting at the back of the boat with his bottom exposed to the cameras, while his rumoured wife rested her head on his lap. When they reached their destination, Censori was seen donning a grey leather trench coat. Meanwhile, West appeared to wrap a sweatshirt around his head and went shoeless, which one celebrity podiatrist warned could increase the "risk of injuries in the foot, and infection when walking barefoot may increase." The pair were accompanied by a mystery guest dressed in all black. The couple have caused quite a stir recently during their Italian getaway, with some calling for Censori to be arrested for public indecency. The 28-year-old has sported a string of daring outfits in past weeks, that some locals have deemed "offensive" – given some areas are known to be predominantly conservative Catholic. "I wish the police would arrest these two for their ignorant behaviour. They are making a mockery of the country," one furious X/Twitter user wrote, while another added: "Why won't the Italian government police or someone stop them?" Tourism website CIU Travel claims: "Walking around in beach attire or, worse, shirtless, is a huge no-no in Italy, unless you have your feet buried deep in the sand." The most moving tributes to George Alagiah following his death from cancer
The most moving tributes to George Alagiah following his death from cancer
George Alagiah, one of the most beloved BBC broadcasters, has died aged 67. The ‘News At Six’ presenter lost his battle with bowel cancer on 24 July, almost a decade after he was diagnosed with the disease. His agent Mary Greenham shared the tragic news via a statement. It read: “I am so terribly sorry to inform you that George Alagiah died peacefully today, surrounded by his family and loved ones. “George fought until the bitter end but sadly that battle ended earlier today." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It continued: “George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public. He simply was a wonderful human being." She added that her thoughts were with his wife, Frances Robathan, and their two sons, as well as their wider family. Greenham's was the first of hundreds of tributes to pour in to the much-admired journalist. Within minutes of the announcement, Twitter was awash with messages of condolence to Alagiah’s loved-ones, and fond memories of his life. Here’s a look at some of the most moving homages to the presenter: The Sri Lanka-born journalist was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, which had spread to his liver and lymph nodes, in April 2014. He endured two rounds of chemotherapy and several operations, including the removal of most of his liver. In October 2015 he announced that his treatment was over and he returned to BBC 'News At Six' on November 10. Alagiah joined the BBC in 1989 and spent many years as one of the corporation’s leading foreign correspondents before moving to presenting. He first began hosting the 6pm news bulletin in early 2003, but stepped up to front it solo four years later following the departure of his co-host, Natasha Kaplinsky. He was previously a prominent foreign correspondent, often as a specialist in Africa with coverage of civil wars in Somalia and Liberia as well as the genocide in Rwanda 20 years ago. Throughout his career he interviewed central political figures, among them former South African president Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and ex-Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe. HARDtalk Nelson Mandela In 1997, George Alagiah spoke to him www.youtube.com Before joining the BBC, Alagiah workied as a print journalist and went on to write a number of books including A Home From Home, which looked at what it means to be British. Throughout his illustrious career, he also presented other shows such as Mixed Britannia, looking at the UK’s mixed-race population. He was made an OBE in the 2008 New Year Honours. His cancer returned in December 2017 and he underwent further treatment before again returning to work. He took another break from studio duties in October 2021 to deal with a further spread of cancer, before returning in April 2022. Appearing in a campaign in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support in 2022, speaking about the impact of his own experience of living with stage four bowel cancer, Alagiah said: “People always ask me how I cope and it’s the hardest question… “The challenge at first was getting my cancer diagnosis straight in my head – despite having so much going for me, a successful career and a loving family, here I was just being told I was dying.” In October last year, Alagiah announced he was taking a break from presenting the BBC’s 'News At Six' following another scan. He said: “A recent scan showed that my cancer has spread further so it’s back to some tough stuff. I’m missing my colleagues. Working in the newsroom has been such an important part of keeping energised and motivated.” Alagiah spoke openly about the experience of living with cancer, joining a videocast for the charity Bowel Cancer UK in 2020 in which he said he sometimes felt he had the “easy part”, living with bowel cancer while his loved ones had to watch. He said: “Those of us living with cancer know that it affects our families almost as much as ourselves. “In some ways I’ve felt through my six-plus years living with cancer that sometimes I have the easy part… My job is just to stay fit and my family has got to watch all of the other things.” Have your say in our news democracy. Gary Lineker 'very honoured' to have been named on 2023 Woke List
Gary Lineker has had the last laugh after he was mocked by being included in a newspaper 'woke list'. The former England striker and BBC Match of the Day presenter has reacted after he was included on the Mail on Sunday's 'Woke List 2023' which highlighted celebrities who "are most high-profile in their awakedness to perceived injustices in society - but who have also been accused of having an exaggerated fixation with such issues". Lineker was included on the list after he compared the government's asylum policy to Nazi Germany in a tweet in March, which led to his temporary suspension from the BBC. Although the list was mocking him, Lineker said he was "very honoured" to be included in it. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter He tweeted: "Very honoured to be on such a list. Thank you to this normally unpleasant newspaper for showing a degree of kindness." The list also named Emma Watson, Emily Maitlis, the Archbishop of Canterbury and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. In our view, that makes him in pretty good company. Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.
