Who is Barbara May Cameron? The activist and poet featured in today's Google Doodle
Today's Google Doodle features Barbara May Cameron, the late Native American photographer, poet, writer, and human rights advocate. The search engine's website shows a cartoon of the activist, holding an LGBTQ+ flag with a camera around her neck, while smiling and hugging figures stand in the background. The cartoon was illustrated by queer Mexican and Chitimachan artist Sienna Gonzales and the reason why she is being featured is because it would have been her 69th birthday. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter But who is she? Cameron was a member of the Hunkpapa group and was born in Fort Yates, North Dakota. She campaigned for LGBTQIA+ acceptance in the Native American community and addressed racism in queer spaces. In 1975, she co-founded Gay American Indians, the first ever dedicated Native American LGBTQIA+ group, with her friend and fellow activist Randy Burns. From 1980 through 1985, she organised the Lesbian Gay Freedom Day Parade and Celebration. She also co-led and won a Supreme Court lawsuit against the Immigration & Naturalisation Service because of its policy of turning away gay people. Later, she became an executive director at Community United Against Violence, where she supported people affected by hate crimes and domestic violence. The San Francisco Mayor appointed Cameron to both the Citizens Committee on Community Development and the San Francisco Human Rights Commission in 1988, and the next mayor appointed her to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She was also active within the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the American Indian AIDS Institute, and served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control, helping with AIDS and childhood immunisation programmes. Cameron died of natural causes on February 12, 2002, aged 47. Have your say in our news democracy. Confusion as social media believe singer Tom Jones is dead
People were baffled when news broke that Tom Jones had died aged 95, leading many to believe the Welsh singer had passed away. However, it was legendary entertainer Thomas John Woodward, known by his stage name Tom Jones. Awkwardly, social media was flooded with tributes for the Welsh singer, with one Facebook user sharing an attempt to fuel the rumour, writing: "At about 11 a.m. ET on Saturday (August 12, 2023), our beloved singer Tom Jones passed away. Tom Jones was born on June 7, 1940 in Pontypridd. He will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page." Many more people shared photos of the 'Sex Bomb' singer online with RIP messages, but The Voice judge is alive and well. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Tom Jones, who wrote the longest-standing musical to date The Fantasticks, sadly lost his battle with cancer on Friday (11 August). Alongside the late composer Harvey Schmidt, Jones' Broadway musical lasted 42 years after opening in Greenwich Village in 1960. Heartwarming messages and memories soon flooded X (formerly known as Twitter). "One of my fondest college memories was when our choreographer would make us stretch to "Orphan in the Storm". In just under a decade Tom Jones, along with Harvey Schmidt, brought us The Fantasticks, 110 in the Shade, I Do! I Do! and Celebration. Incredible. RIP Tom Jones," one person penned. Another wrote: "RIP to writer/lyricist/director Tom Jones. He's most known for his Broadway musicals The Fantasticks, 110 in the Shade & Celebration. Great music and a wonderful legacy. Thank you, Mr. Jones." Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.

Lana Del Rey prophecy explained after she predicts the downfall of female singers in 2020
Lana Del Rey prophecy explained after she predicts the downfall of female singers in 2020
Fans are calling Lana del Rey a "prophet" after Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, and Cardi B have all found themselves in controversy in recent weeks. Back in 2020, the 'Video Games' singer posted to Instagram a letter titled 'question for the culture' where she expressed resentment towards the music industry's standards for women saying there was no place for her and her music in the industry. Whilst making her point she mentioned the artists Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Kehlani, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce, saying they get praised for writing songs about "being sexy, wearing no clothes, f***ing, cheating etc" whilst del Ray gets accused of "glamorising abuse" in her songs. Her post was widely criticised at the time, accusing the singer of being racist for bringing down other female artists, the majority of them being women of colour. But over two years later, the 38-year-old is back in conversations for her post as her fans claim she's a "prophet" after many of the musicians she mentioned in 2020 have found themselves in the middle of controversy. Doja Cat has faced backlash for being rude to fans, as well as dating a Twitch streamer who has had allegations of harassment. Ariana Grande has been accused of cheating on her husband, who had recently welcomed a baby with his wife. Cardi B also was in the middle of a debate after she threw her microphone at a fan who threw a drink at her whilst she was performing. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Del Ray's apparent ability to predict the downfall of these artists has many shocked at the accuracy: Kehlani, Nicki Minaj, and Beyoncé are the three artists seemingly left on the list, so only time will tell if Del Ray truly is a prophet.
