The most moving tributes to George Alagiah following his death from cancer
George Alagiah, one of the most beloved BBC broadcasters, has died aged 67. The ‘News At Six’ presenter lost his battle with bowel cancer on 24 July, almost a decade after he was diagnosed with the disease. His agent Mary Greenham shared the tragic news via a statement. It read: “I am so terribly sorry to inform you that George Alagiah died peacefully today, surrounded by his family and loved ones. “George fought until the bitter end but sadly that battle ended earlier today." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It continued: “George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public. He simply was a wonderful human being." She added that her thoughts were with his wife, Frances Robathan, and their two sons, as well as their wider family. Greenham's was the first of hundreds of tributes to pour in to the much-admired journalist. Within minutes of the announcement, Twitter was awash with messages of condolence to Alagiah’s loved-ones, and fond memories of his life. Here’s a look at some of the most moving homages to the presenter: The Sri Lanka-born journalist was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, which had spread to his liver and lymph nodes, in April 2014. He endured two rounds of chemotherapy and several operations, including the removal of most of his liver. In October 2015 he announced that his treatment was over and he returned to BBC 'News At Six' on November 10. Alagiah joined the BBC in 1989 and spent many years as one of the corporation’s leading foreign correspondents before moving to presenting. He first began hosting the 6pm news bulletin in early 2003, but stepped up to front it solo four years later following the departure of his co-host, Natasha Kaplinsky. He was previously a prominent foreign correspondent, often as a specialist in Africa with coverage of civil wars in Somalia and Liberia as well as the genocide in Rwanda 20 years ago. Throughout his career he interviewed central political figures, among them former South African president Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and ex-Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe. Throughout his illustrious career, he also presented other shows such as Mixed Britannia, looking at the UK’s mixed-race population. He was made an OBE in the 2008 New Year Honours. His cancer returned in December 2017 and he underwent further treatment before again returning to work. He took another break from studio duties in October 2021 to deal with a further spread of cancer, before returning in April 2022. Appearing in a campaign in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support in 2022, speaking about the impact of his own experience of living with stage four bowel cancer, Alagiah said: “People always ask me how I cope and it’s the hardest question… “The challenge at first was getting my cancer diagnosis straight in my head – despite having so much going for me, a successful career and a loving family, here I was just being told I was dying.” In October last year, Alagiah announced he was taking a break from presenting the BBC’s 'News At Six' following another scan. He said: “A recent scan showed that my cancer has spread further so it’s back to some tough stuff. I’m missing my colleagues. Working in the newsroom has been such an important part of keeping energised and motivated.” Alagiah spoke openly about the experience of living with cancer, joining a videocast for the charity Bowel Cancer UK in 2020 in which he said he sometimes felt he had the “easy part”, living with bowel cancer while his loved ones had to watch. He said: “Those of us living with cancer know that it affects our families almost as much as ourselves. “In some ways I’ve felt through my six-plus years living with cancer that sometimes I have the easy part… My job is just to stay fit and my family has got to watch all of the other things.” Have your say in our news democracy. How 'Heartstopper' became the anti-'Euphoria' with its tender coming-of-age tone
Nothing particularly dramatic happens during "Heartstopper," the British teen drama that returns for its second season this week. And that alone, oddly, makes the show -- which the San Francisco Chronicle rightly dubbed "the anti-'Euphoria'" -- feel somehow revolutionary, even more so a year after its US debut.

Doja Cat faces backlash for selfie in Sam Hyde shirt
Rapper and singer Doja Cat is being called out for wearing a shirt with Sam Hyde's face on it. In a since-deleted Instagram post, Doja Cat, whose real name is Amala Dlamini, posted a selfie where a T-shirt with Hyde's face on it was visible. She has since posted a different selfie where the T-shirt is out of the frame. However, she has decided to leave a selfie featuring Hyde's face on her Instagram story. Hyde is the co-founder of the sketch comedy group Million Dollar Extreme. He faced criticism for the use of racism, homophobia and anti-semitism in his 'humour'. In 2017, Hyde also pledged $5,000 towards the legal defence fund of the founder of neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer, Andrew Anglin. The new selfie that was uploaded by Doja Cat to replace the original featuring Hyde, is flooded with comments saying things such as: "We saw the first post", "girl get it together. This isn't cute or funny", and "Why are you hiding your shirt? Embarrassed that you're wearing something with a nazi on it?" Over on Twitter/X, listeners and fans have been sharing their thoughts, with one user writing: "We need to stop trivialising Doja Cat's conduct as 'edginess' and be clear that she's a Nazi Sympathiser." Whilst another called her "a pick me for incels". One user said fans can no longer "separate artist from art" and that they "see how much of an awful person she is." This isn't the first time the 27-year-old has come under fire after her boyfriend was revealed to be controversial streamer J. Cyrus. Many criticised her for associating with someone who had previously had allegations of sexual abuse brought against him. At the time, Dojo told fans: "I DON'T GIVE A F*CK WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT MY PERSONAL LIFE I NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL GIVE A F*CK WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT ME OR MY PERSONAL LIFE GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE MISERABLE HOES HAHA!" Doja Cat has not publicly responded to the criticism being directed at her regarding her Sam Hyde T-shirt. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
