Caroline Flack’s mum gives poignant message to Phillip Schofield in Newsnight interview
The mother of the late ITV presenter Caroline Flack has given her thoughts on the ongoing scandal surrounding the former This Morning host Phillip Schofield, after the broadcaster said he understood “how [she] felt” amid “relentless” media criticism of his affair with a younger male colleague. Schofield quit the popular ITV daytime show in May, before releasing a statement in which he confirmed he had a “consensual on-off relationship” which was “unwise, but not illegal”. In his first broadcast interview since issuing these comments, carried out by the BBC’s media editor Amol Rajan, the broadcaster said he has “lost everything”. “My girls saved my life… Last week, they haven’t left me for a moment. They’ve been by my side every moment, because they’re scared to let me out of their sight," Schofield said. “They said to me, ‘don’t you dare do this on our watch. We’re supposed to be looking after you.’ “If my girls hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t be here, because I don’t see a future. And so how much do you want a man to take? “And this is how Caroline Flack felt, and it didn’t stop.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Flack quit ITV2’s reality show Love Island in December 2019 after facing an assault charge over an altercation with her boyfriend. She died by suicide two months later amid intense criticism online and in the press. Now, after Schofield referenced her daughter’s experience in his BBC interview, Caroline Flack’s mother Christine spoke to Newsnight and confirmed she does “feel worried for him” amid the “relentless” comments around the scandal. After presenter Victoria Derbyshire read Schofield’s remarks to Ms Flack, she replied: “That’s exactly how she felt. Everyday, she’d try and be a little bit stronger, which I imagine Phillip is, and you get more and more thrown at you. “He knew Caroline, and I must say when she died he was very upset, and I think he’s now realising even more what she went through. But until it happens to you, you feel sad, but you don’t understand.” Asked what her message to Schofield would be, Ms Flack added: “I hope they’ll get over this, and they will. They will. “Don’t do anything silly. You’ve got your daughters, you’ve got your friends.“ Ms Flack has since been commended online for her comments on social media. In his lengthy interview with the BBC, Schofield also said the fact the scandal has become “so massive” is “predominantly homophobic”, and that he is a “victim of hate”. Uri Geller predicts aliens will arrive on Earth ‘within 10 to 20 years’ to prevent nuclear war
Uri Geller has claimed that aliens will arrive on Earth “within 10 to 20 years”. Geller, the self-proclaimed psychic, has predicted that extra terrestrial beings are setting their sights on our planet – and he thinks NASA needs to make preparations right away. “I think in the coming 10 to 20 years there will be a landing,” Geller told The Mirror. He doesn’t think they’re here to cause us harm, though. “It won’t be an invasion. Wherever they come from - I think maybe two or three species out there - if they wanted to destroy us they could." Geller even thinks the aliens are going to arrive and give us a few tips on how to keep world peace. He went on to say: “They’re concerned we might press the red buttons and nuclear bombs will fly. They won’t want our planet destroyed.” Geller added: “There will be a Steven Spielberg type landing. I hope they land somewhere like the White House lawn or the Eiffel Tower. “It will be the biggest revelation in history - religiously, archaeologically, everything. It will be like finding the Arc of the Covenant.” So there you go – if Geller is right, there’s a whole lot to look out for over the next two decades. It’s hardly the first time Geller has spoken about aliens. In fact, he believed that UFOs were out in force on the day of the Queen’s funeral last year. Geller previously told his Twitter followers to “watch the skies over London” on Monday, when the late monarch was laid to rest after her death aged 96. In the post, which was accompanied by a video message, the entertainer wrote: “The Queen’s funeral. I believe ‘they’ will want to pay their respects too! “Three months ago, a UFO flew over Her Majesty’s jubilee celebrations [and] this may happen again. Send me what you have seen or caught on camera! God Bless The Queen!” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Jason Aldean speaks out after 'racist' song becomes smash hit
American singer Jason Aldean has spoken out to thank his fans after his “racist” song Try That In A Small Town becomes a hit. The country singer’s track saw a 999 per cent increase in streams after it began trending last week for its content following the release of the accompanying music video. The tune also made it to number 2 on the Billboard Chart. The lyrics of the song have been accused, by some, of having violent and racist undertones. The chorus says: “Try that in a small town, see how far you make it down the road. Round here we take care of our own. “You cross that line it won't take long for you to find out, I recommend you don't try that in a small town.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter On Twitter, Aldean shared a montage clip featuring imagery taken behind the scenes of his tour. In one clip, Aldean addressed the crowd referencing the controversy around the song. “So, somebody asked me, ‘Hey man, do you think you’re going to play this song tonight?’. The answer was simple. The people have spoken and you guys spoke very, very loudly this week.” Aldean denied that the track has any racial undertones, taking to social media last week to write: “In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. “These references are not only meritless, but dangerous.” The music video for the song features imagery of riots and protests and was pulled from the air by television network Country Music Television (CMT) in the US three days after it was first shown.
