'I'm a dad first': Ryan Gosling reveals he took 4-year-long break from acting to be with wife Eva Mendes and children

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Ryan Gosling has spoken candidly about his fatherhood journey and the reason why he took a four-year sabbatical from acting. The 'Barbie' star, 42, claimed that he made the choice when he and his wife, 49-year-old Eva Mendes, welcomed their second child.

Gosling, who is on the cover of GQ's global summer issue, said in an interview with the outlet that he planned to spend more time with his girls instead of acting. He said he "wanted to spend as much time as [he] could with" his two daughters, Esmeralda Amada, age 8, and Amada Lee, age 7. He was able to clearly define boundaries between his personal and professional lives after taking a break from acting. Gosling, who will play Ken in the highly awaited 'Barbie' film, said, "I treat it more like work now, and not like it's, you know, therapy. It's a job, and I think in a way that allows me to be better at it because there's less interference."

'I'm like a dad first'

Gosling has previously discussed how he prioritizes being a "dad first," saying, "I'm like a dad first, and part of the reason for doing the film [The Gray Man] was this opportunity for us to go to these interesting places and be there with my kids," according to DailyMail.

Gosling revealed, "You know it's funny, we went to France and we went everywhere - we went to the Louvre and all these things. And if I asked them now, 'What was your favorite part about France?' They will say, 'The fruit plate at the hotel'."

Who plays Ken in the upcoming 'Barbie' movie?

Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' pairs up Gosling's Ken with the Barbie doll as they exit the toy world and enter the real one for reasons that Warner Bros and the cast have not yet disclosed. Simu Liu, Scott Evans, John Cena, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir also make appearances as various versions of the doll Ken, making Gosling not the only actor playing that character in the movie. The 'Barbie' movie is set to hit theaters on Friday, July 21.
