LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'The Marvels' is on its way to becoming the worst box-office disaster for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date.

The 33rd installment to the MCU has collected only $47 million in the US in its opening weekend, which is the lowest in the franchise's history.

The movie made $110 million globally. In comparison, the 2019 MCU film 'Avengers: Endgame' made box office history by earning $1.2 billion in global ticket sales in its opening run.

'The Marvels' is a sequel to Captain Marvel, which was released in 2019, and stars Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris.

It was made on a budget of $220 million. The story follows Captain Marvel, played by Larson, trying to rescue a destabilized universe with the help of Ms Marvel, played by the TV show's Vellani, and Captain Monica Rambeau, played by Parris.

'Unprecedented Marvel box office collapse', says analyst

According to analyst David A Gross, the movie was down 67% on the first film, reported the BBC. He stated that superhero sequels usually perform better in terms of box office than the originals.

However, it is still unclear whether this outcome reflects superhero fatigue at the cinema after so many hugely successful blockbusters.

In Gross' opinion, the growth of streaming services may be putting a dent in cinema revenue.

The SAG-AFTRA actors' strike, which recently ended may also have a role to play, as the stars were not able to promote their films during that period.

He also cited "unimaginative and bad movies" across the superhero genre.

An earlier article in Forbes stated that superhero films "just don't feel essential anymore," adding, "Marvel Studios seems to be suffering from the same issues the comics did, releasing too much, too soon, resulting in a confused, fatigued audience."

Netizens react to fansite blaming strike for dismal box office numbers

As a fansite of 'The Marvels' took to X to point out the SAG-AFTRA strike and misogyny were the reasons for 'The Marvels' not doing well in theatres, other users on the platform had a hard time believing as the following tweets reveal.

A fan questioned, "Loki seems to be doing fine and that was during the same time. So what’s your excuse now?"

"Ok if that’s your logic then explain Oppenheimer’s and Barbie’s success… oh wait you can’t," stated a user.

One user opined, "Super Mario Bros. Movie. Oppenheimer. Barbie. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Stop treating your fans like trash or get used to them turning their backs on you. Also? Take a primer on humility and respect you DESPERATELY need it."

One user had enough of excuses and said, "That's a whole lot of excuses for what seems to be a terrible movie that not even women showed up for."

"5 Nights at Freddy's, Barbie, Oppenheimer? I'd even focus on Barbie because it was a female focused movie and it was awesome. Sometimes, reflect on yourself to find the root of your own failure," suggested one fan.
