Teyana Taylor divorce: From 'bestie' to 'narcissist', singer reveals truth about troubled marriage with Iman Shumpert

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Singer and actress Teyana Taylor has pulled back the curtains on her once seemingly blissful marriage with former NBA star Iman Shumpert.

The 'Gonna Love Me' singer, who announced their separation in September, has now disclosed a tumultuous narrative of jealousy, insecurity, and alleged narcissistic behavior in legal documents obtained by TMZ.

Teyana Taylor's divorce filing unveils contrasting reality to public image

Contrary to her initial Instagram announcement, where Teyana insisted on the couple's amicable separation and maintained their status as the "best of friends," recent legal filings paint a different picture.

The documents reveal that Teyana filed for divorce in January, a revelation that comes as a surprise, considering the public facade of unity the couple presented for months.

According to the legal papers filed in Georgia, Teyana accuses Iman of harboring deep-seated jealousy regarding her rising fame. Despite Iman's successful NBA career and lucrative contracts, Teyana claims he felt insecure about standing in her shadow during public events.

The 'A Thousand and One' star alleges that Iman's discontent with her notoriety escalated over the years, leading to a strain on their relationship.

"To be 1000% clear, "infidelity" ain’t one of the reasons for our departure," she claimed. "We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children. Most importantly we are FAMILY & in the 10yrs together, 7yrs married we ain’t ever played with or about THAT."

Why is Teyana Taylor revealing this now?

Teyana and Iman got married in 2016, sealing their union while donning biker jackets.

Fast forward to the present, and Teyana now asserts that their matrimony is "irretrievably broken," a fact that appears glaringly evident given the multitude of challenges they've faced.

One notable claim in the documents is Teyana's assertion that Iman, despite signing a $40 million dollar contract with the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers in 2015, continued to be resentful of her success in acting and music. She suggests that Iman's jealousy and insecurities eventually spiraled into emotional and mental abuse.

Teyana asserted that she made sacrifices to appease Iman, turning down recording opportunities and acting gigs because he allegedly did not want her to work. Paradoxically, when she decided to take a break from work after giving birth to their child, Teyana claims Iman complained about her not making money.

Teyana Taylor's legal battle exposes alleged cruelty and narcissism

In the lawsuit, Teyana claimed Iman was "treating her cruelly and displaying extreme narcissistic behavior throughout the majority of their marriage." She felt compelled to "dim her light" for the sake of marital harmony. Despite her efforts to keep the family together, Teyana contends that Iman's behavior became increasingly toxic, prompting her to initiate divorce proceedings in 2021.

Interestingly, Teyana withdrew the divorce filing briefly before officially pulling the trigger in January, citing "unable to handle the emotional rollercoaster."

She has accused Iman of involvement in multiple cheating scandals during their marriage, referencing a DUI arrest and a 2022 incident where he was arrested for weed possession at an airport.

As Teyana seeks temporary and permanent primary physical custody of their two children, along with joint legal custody and child support, the narrative of a harmonious separation initially presented by the singer has taken a sharp turn.
